The hauberk is a long shirt of chain mail, worn over a padded jacket. Up until the 13th Century, the hauberk was the soldier's main defense. During the 14th Century, plate armor began to cover vulnerable spots as well. This hauberk has a tiny rivet holding every ring closed.
The funeral brass of Sir John d'Abernoun the Younger,

who died in 1327, shows the knee-length mail hauberk cut higher at the sides for ease of movement. I plan to cut mine to match.
My hauberk weighs 25 pounds, and has about 10,000 individual rings. I bought it from The Ancient Armory.
