Italian Armor Designs

What did "real armor" look like?  Well, by the 15th Century, there were many, many styles of armor.  And, like the fashion market of today, many of the top designers were Italian.

This excellent Web site has detailed drawings of many different styles of Italian armor.

"These are twenty-two of the best diagrams for Italian horseman's armour I have found, taken from LE ARMATURA DI S. MARIA DELLE GRAZIE DI CURTATONE DI MANTOVA E L'ARMATURA LOMBARDA DEL '400. They are absolutely great for design ideas for armourers interested in making full horseman's suits of armour. Note that many of these suits have German elements such as sweeping curves in the fluting and plate edges. These German elements were put into many of these suits because they were to be sold on the international armour market. Since German armour styling was also as popular as Italian styles, the Italian armourers catered to those customers desiring gothic German armour by making "Italian export" harnesses. The spade shaped tassets hanging from the front skirts or faulds of the harnesses are distinctly Italian style. Italian armour is generally characterized by smooth, round features."
