Camping with Toddlers

An SCA event is a family outing.  But, often they are held at campgrounds far from home.  That means camping with small children, and that means special accommodations.

Night Light

Going to sleep in a tent with a lighted candle burning is a famously bad idea.  But, it's essential that the little ones be able to find the chamber pot in the dark.  We have had very good success using glow sticks as night lights for the kids.  Our modern tent has a mesh sling in the ceiling for stowing small articles.  A light stick there does a good job of lighting the whole dome with a soft glow.  We plan to hang a little lantern with a glow stick in it from the tent poles of our pavilion.

Chamber Pot

One of our biggest worries about camping with small kids was what to do in the middle of the night when they yell, "I have to go now!"  We have a plastic potty seat that we bought for toilet training.  It works just fine for camping, too.  In the morning, we just lift out the removable bowl and empty it properly.

Picky Eaters

We always travel with apples, bread, and cheese.  As long as we have those, the kids won't starve just because they don't recognize "turnip tart" as food.  The little "Laughing Cow" waxed cheese balls work well.
