I once passed a boring sermon in a church in San Antonio by studying the woodwork.  (I believe it was the Cathedral Chapel of St. John, but I'm not sure.)  What I remember clearly was that they had created the illusion of gothic tracery by the clever use of millwork over flat panels.  My bulletin for the day had architectural sketches all over it.

Many years later, my wife wanted a porch swing.  I dug out the church bulletin that I had saved all that time and with some arm waving persuaded her that what she really wanted was a gothic porch swing.

Bless her heart, she agreed, and a large pile of sawdust later, this was the result.

Here's a close-up of the roof trusses.  Here's a plan for them.

And, a close-up of the end.

The eight triangular panels were cut from a single sheet of plywood.  They interlock with the 2x6 rafters.  Between the patterns cut out of the plywood and the mullions applied over it, the overall effect is not flat at all, but very sculptured.

I think this design would make a great gate for a baronial encampment, don't you?
