The SCA is full of fun people doing interesting stuff, but it can be pretty alien unless you have some idea of what in the world is going on. Here's a very useful Newcomers' Guide put together by an SCA chapter in Texas.
Since it's a costume party, you can't just go in street clothes. Luckily, our local group has boxes of really nice "loaner" costumes at major events.
